Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Debtster — how it splits expenses, handles currencies, settles up, works offline, and protects your data.
What is Debtster?
Debtster is a free iOS and Android app that splits shared expenses among a group and tracks who owes whom. You record what each person paid, and Debtster keeps every balance up to date in real time and tells you the simplest way to settle up. It works for flatshares, trips, dinners, couples and families.
Is Debtster free?
Yes. Debtster is free to download and use on both the App Store and Google Play. You can create accounts, log expenses and settle balances at no cost.
How does Debtster split an expense?
Debtster splits any expense evenly or by weight, where the weight can be servings, nights, kilometres or any custom share. You choose who paid, who it is for and how it divides, so even complex splits stay as simple as adding up.
Does everyone in the group need the app?
No. Debtster works even if you are the only one with the app: you can keep the books for the whole group in a 100% local account. If you prefer to share, invite the others and the account syncs for everyone.
Does Debtster support multiple currencies?
Yes. Each account can use a live or fixed exchange rate, so you can record expenses in different currencies on a trip without doing any conversion by hand.
How does Debtster decide who pays whom?
Debtster calculates the minimum set of payments that brings everyone back to zero. Instead of many small transfers, it nets balances down to the fewest payments, and you mark each one as settled with a swipe.
Can I use Debtster offline or just for myself?
Yes. A local account works fully offline and without sharing, which is ideal if you track expenses for everyone yourself. Shared accounts sync automatically when you are online.
What platforms is Debtster available on?
Debtster is available on iOS through the App Store and on Android through Google Play.
How does Debtster handle my data and privacy?
Debtster keeps your data tied to your account and lets you delete it at any time from the app. You can request full account deletion, and the privacy policy explains exactly what is stored and why.
How is Debtster different from other expense-splitting apps?
Debtster is built for real-world group complexity. It can treat a couple or family as a single entity with no internal debts, split by weight, servings, nights or kilometres, handle multiple currencies per account, and show a spending dashboard by category, person and period, while still settling up with the minimum number of payments.
